Job Summary

The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart (SMNS) is seeking a highly skilled Collection Technician to manage and expand one of Germany's largest Lepidoptera collections. This role involves the high-quality preparation and permanent conservation of butterfly and moth specimens, including handling historically significant and type material. Key daily tasks include collection digitization, data entry into the Diversity Workbench database, and supporting curatorial staff with loan requests. The technician will also be heavily involved in integrated pest monitoring (IPM) and assisting with molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis. The ideal candidate possesses a completed qualification as an Entomology Preparator or Technical Assistant, or a relevant university degree, coupled with extensive professional experience in insect collections and databases. This is a permanent, full-time position offering the opportunity to contribute actively to an internationally renowned research institution focused on solving the global biodiversity crisis.

Required Skills

Education

Completed training as an Entomology Preparator or Technical Assistant, or comparable entomological qualification (e.g., relevant university degree)

Experience

  • Extensive experience managing insect collections and databases
  • Comprehensive knowledge of insect systematics and anatomy
  • Responsible handling of valuable and sensitive collection material
  • Experience with Lepidoptera taxonomy and systematics (Desirable)
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques (Desirable)
  • Willingness to participate in fieldwork under simple or challenging conditions
