Job Summary

The Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) is seeking a Research Scientist for a four-year, fixed-term doctoral position starting January 1, 2026. This role is part of the KOMBI project, focusing on understanding the composition of organic and mineral suspended solids and their influence on pollutant binding in estuaries, specifically the Elbe. The successful candidate will conduct extensive scientific literature reviews, plan and lead research processes, and perform data acquisition and analysis. Key responsibilities include planning and executing sampling, sample preparation, laboratory analyses, and experiments, as well as contributing to the development of modeling concepts. The role requires comprehensive characterization of suspended solids, water, and sediment samples, including pollutant analysis and the use of advanced methods for surface characterization. This position offers an opportunity for doctoral research and publication in peer-reviewed journals within a dynamic and interdisciplinary team at the BfG in Koblenz.

Required Skills

Education

University Diploma or Master's degree in Chemistry, Geosciences, Geoecology, Environmental Sciences, or Environmental Engineering

Experience

  • Professional experience with the interrelationships of hydrological, morphological, water chemical, and ecological issues in estuaries and flowing waters
  • Expertise in selecting sampling methods and analytical procedures for suspended solids, bound pollutants, and aquatic pollutants
  • Expertise in pollutant inputs and occurrences in estuaries
  • Experience in the acquisition, preparation, and evaluation of physico-chemical water quality data and suspended solids data
  • Experience with hydrographic/chemical databases
  • Expertise in the binding behavior of pollutants to suspended solids under variable environmental conditions
  • Experience with mathematical model formulations and sorption models
  • Experience in publishing research results
  • Experience with GIS (advantageous)
  • Experience with noSQL databases (advantageous)
