Job Summary

This doctoral researcher position offers a unique opportunity to advance the understanding of oceanic processes, particularly submesoscale phenomena like eddies and fronts, using cutting-edge computer science methods. Working collaboratively between GEOMAR's Ocean Dynamics group and Kiel University's Data Science group, the researcher will analyze complex spatiotemporal data from high-resolution global ocean simulations, focusing on the Agulhas region. Key tasks involve developing new data mining techniques to identify critical processes within large datasets and creating deep learning algorithms, such as graph neural networks, to explain and ultimately model these small-scale processes. The goal is to develop surrogate models for more efficient ocean simulations. This role is ideal for someone passionate about interdisciplinary research at the intersection of oceanography and advanced data science, offering integration into a vibrant research community and the chance to pursue a PhD within the Helmholtz School for Marine Data Science (MarDATA).
