Job Summary

The Helmut-Schmidt-Universität/Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg is seeking a Scientific Laboratory Head to take on a pivotal role within its Institute for Materials Technology. This position involves significant administrative responsibility for the institute, including developing laboratory capacities and managing personnel for research and teaching. The successful candidate will lead the Surface Technology and Additive Manufacturing working group, coordinating research priorities and workflows in close collaboration with the Institute Director. Key responsibilities also include mentoring doctoral candidates, identifying new research needs, and acquiring national and international research projects. The role demands strong representation of scientific results through publications and presentations at conferences, alongside teaching and examination duties. This is an attractive opportunity for an experienced professional to contribute to cutting-edge research in surface technology and high-speed deformation of metallic alloys, often in partnership with industrial leaders.

Required Skills

Education

Successfully completed scientific university degree (Master, Diplom (Univ.)) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a comparable field. Over-average doctorate in one of the mentioned fields, ideally in kinetic spraying (desired).

Experience

  • Several years of research experience nationally and internationally, including industrial collaborations
  • Practical knowledge and several years of experience in materials science, materials analysis, and kinetic spraying
  • Successful research activity demonstrated by scientific publications and presentations
  • At least one year of experience in scientific teaching, preferably in surface technology or other material science topics
  • At least three years of leadership experience in applied research (desired)
  • Experience in successful project acquisition and project management (desired)

  • Must possess the qualification for the higher civil service of the federal government OR a completed scientific university degree (Master, Diplom (Univ.)) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a comparable field, plus at least two and a half years of relevant professional experience after graduation at the time of civil servant appointment. Willingness to undergo a health suitability assessment and potentially an extended security clearance. Commitment to the liberal democratic basic order as per the German Basic Law. German citizenship or citizenship of another EU member state required for civil servant appointment, and generally not having completed the 50th year of age at the time of appointment. The position is suitable for part-time work.
