Job Summary

This role is for a Research Associate specializing in Infrastructure Automation and Data Persistence, focusing on DevOps practices within the Institute for Sustainable Water Systems (inwa) at Hof University. The successful candidate will be instrumental in building and maintaining a containerized server infrastructure using Docker Compose, developing robust update and recovery procedures, and configuring frontend containers. A key part of the role involves setting up and operating time-series databases like InfluxDB or PostgreSQL + TimescaleDB, alongside developing and maintaining system-level automation processes for backups and development support. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to sustainable water management through innovative digital solutions, working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team and presenting scientific findings. It's ideal for someone with strong Linux administration skills and a keen interest in water management.

Required Skills

Education

University degree (Diploma / Bachelor / Master) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, IT Security, or a comparable technical field. For foreign qualifications, a certificate evaluation from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) is required.

Experience

  • Practical experience with Docker and Docker Compose
  • Proficient in Shell scripting and tools like cron, rsync, systemd, journald
  • Experience in implementing security measures for data and systems
  • Experience in system performance optimization
  • Initial experience with time-series databases like InfluxDB 2 or TimescaleDB is desired

Additional

  • Must be eligible to work in Germany. The position is full-time (40.06 hours/week) and limited until September 30, 2027, under the German Fixed-Term Employment Contracts for Scientific Staff Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz). Part-time employment is possible. Strong interest in the water management sector with a willingness to engage with aspects beyond one's own specialization. Service-oriented approach and ability to work independently and in teams. Willingness to contribute to scientific publications.
