Job Summary

The University of Rostock is seeking a Research Associate for the Chair of Aquatic Ecology, focusing on a project to develop and implement conservation concepts for non-commercially used fish fauna in the German Exclusive Economic Zone. This role involves conducting research on fish communities using non- or minimally invasive methods, analyzing fish communities via eDNA, and validating field data through lab experiments on eDNA dispersion and degradation. The successful candidate will also be responsible for publishing and presenting research findings, with the potential to use the results for a doctoral thesis. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to marine strategy directives and biodiversity strategies, working within an interdisciplinary team in a family-friendly university environment.

Required Skills

Education

University degree (State Examination, Diploma, Master, or comparable) with a focus on Fish or Fishery Biology, Marine Biology, or Genetics, preferably with good results.

Experience

  • Knowledge and practical experience in molecular or microbiological methods and techniques
  • Experience in evaluating genetic or ecological data in R or another programming language
  • Desired experience in handling eDNA samples
  • Willingness and minimum physical fitness for multi-day sea voyages and field work
  • Ability to utilize research results for personal scientific qualification (PhD)

Additional

  • Part-time position (26 hours/week), project-limited until December 31, 2029. Must be able to work on Campus Südstadt, Rostock. Willingness to acquire basic German language skills if not already possessed.
