Job Summary

The Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW) is seeking a Research Scientist to join their Data and Methods department in Karlsruhe. In this role, you will contribute to an internal research and development project focused on automating grid generation for numerical flow models used in waterway engineering. Your day-to-day work will involve developing algorithms, applying machine learning methods to recognize terrain structures, and managing complex geospatial data. You will collaborate within an interdisciplinary team, consult on modeling and quality assurance, and have the opportunity to publish findings or pursue a doctorate. This position is ideal for someone passionate about software development, numerical methods, and environmental infrastructure, offering a unique blend of practical application and academic research in an agile, innovation-driven environment.

Required Skills

Education

Completed university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Geoinformatics, Applied Mathematics, Technomathematics, Simulation Technology, or a comparable field.

Experience

  • Professional experience in software development
  • Experience with algorithms and developing new solution approaches
  • Experience with geospatial data and grid generation
  • Academic research experience (e.g., during a PhD or Postdoc phase)
  • Experience with software development under Linux
  • Experience with Machine Learning algorithms and methods
