Job Summary

This full-time, permanent role involves leading the Climate Protection team for the City of Aachen, a key participant in the EU mission for 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the team while developing strategic goals alongside department leadership. Key tasks include operationalizing climate processes, monitoring integrated climate protection concepts (IKSK), and managing municipal heat and energy planning. You will act as a central coordinator for cross-departmental measures, acquire funding through national and EU programs, and build essential networks and partnerships. This position is ideal for a strategic thinker who can bridge the gap between technical environmental engineering and administrative communication. The role offers a secure public service contract, flexible working models including mobile work, and the opportunity to directly shape the climate neutrality path of a major regional employer.

Required Skills

Education

Master's degree or Diploma in Natural Sciences, Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, or a related field. Eligibility for the 'higher service' (Laufbahngruppe 2, 2. Einstiegsamt) in environmental technical administration is required.

Experience

  • Several years of professional experience relevant to climate protection and environmental management
  • Professional experience in public administration or environmental engineering services
  • Experience in leading teams with an integrative and cooperative leadership style is highly desirable
  • Experience in managing innovation processes or working within think tanks is preferred
  • Proven experience in cross-departmental coordination and project management

Additional

  • Must be willing to work occasional evenings or weekends for specific events. Requires completion of a mandatory leadership training course (D 300) upon appointment. Work permit for Germany is required for the public service sector.
