Job Summary
This role involves conducting critical field and laboratory research to restore bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) populations in the Baltic Sea. As a PhD candidate within the Experimental Ecology unit, you will investigate competition between brown algae species, map historical and current distributions, and optimize restoration techniques using stone substrates and algae zygotes. Day-to-day tasks include performing field experiments in the Eckernförde Bay, analyzing current drift patterns, and collaborating with government agencies and international research partners. The position is unique for its direct impact on marine conservation and 'Blue Carbon' storage initiatives. It offers a 3-year contract at 75% of a full-time position (TVöD E13), providing a structured path to a doctoral degree in natural sciences within a world-leading marine research environment in Kiel.
Required Skills
Education
Master's degree in Biological Oceanography, Biology, Ecology, or a related scientific field.
Experience
- Professional experience in biological oceanography, biology, or ecology
- Experience with field work techniques, specifically in marine environments like the Baltic Sea
- Experience in mapping and spatial data analysis using GIS tools
- Experience or willingness to interact with diverse stakeholders including tourism and nature conservation authorities
- Experience with statistical methods and analysis of large datasets (preferred)
Languages
Additional
- Scientific Diver certification (or the physical ability and willingness to obtain it promptly); Class B driver's license; ability to work 75% of standard weekly hours; location-based in Kiel, Germany.
