Job Summary

This role within the State Office for the Environment in Mainz focuses on the biological monitoring and management of fish populations in line with EU and national water directives. As a Fisheries Policy Officer, you will be responsible for conducting statewide monitoring programs, updating species catalogs for fish, mussels, and crayfish, and contributing to the Eel Management Plan for the Rhine. Your day-to-day will involve evaluating hydromorphological conditions, managing data collection contracts, and collaborating with national and international committees to restore ecological connectivity in waterways. The position is ideal for experts in aquatic ecology who enjoy a mix of technical assessment and administrative governance. Required Skills

Education

University degree (Master or Diploma) in Biology, Fisheries Biology, Fisheries Science, Limnology, Hydrobiology, or a comparable field of study.

Experience

  • Professional experience in fisheries biology, limnology, or hydrobiology
  • Experience in conducting biological monitoring programs according to EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) standards
  • Experience in the use of the national assessment procedure for fish (fiBS)
  • Experience in managing and analyzing large datasets
  • Experience in drafting technical statements and participating in professional committees
  • Experience in public procurement and contract awarding is preferred
