Job Summary

This permanent role at the Federal Institute for Hydrology (BfG) focuses on the intersection of waterway infrastructure and ecological preservation. As a Research Associate, you will be responsible for managing plant biodiversity aspects across federal waterways, conducting national and international research projects on riverbank and floodplain vegetation, and supervising academic theses. Your day-to-day will involve developing spatially explicit ecological models, monitoring vegetation development, and providing expert scientific advice to federal ministries and waterway authorities. You will also work on innovative remote sensing methods and ecological restoration planning, such as unsealing riverbanks and managing invasive species. This position is unique for its direct impact on federal environmental policy and the opportunity to work in a highly interdisciplinary, modern research environment in Koblenz. Required Skills

Education

University Diploma or Master's degree in Biology, Aquatic Ecology, Geo/Environmental Sciences, or a comparable qualification. A PhD is considered desirable.

Experience

  • Professional experience in modeling habitat changes using statistical or process-based models
  • Demonstrated experience in applying remote sensing methods for vegetation analysis
  • Experience in developing management foundations and publications for political consulting
  • Proven track record in project management and interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Experience in supervising academic theses or conducting university-level teaching is preferred
