Job Summary

This role involves interdisciplinary research within the 'Fire Science' field at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin. The successful candidate will focus on the flame retardancy of polymers, specifically working on the 'FireSafeMycel' project regarding the fire behavior of mycelium materials. Day-to-day responsibilities include the conception and production of systematically varied material samples, conducting cross-disciplinary experiments, and performing thermal analysis and fire tests. You will be responsible for data interpretation, scientific discussion, and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences. Required Skills

Education

Completed university degree (M.Sc./M.Eng.) and a Doctorate (PhD) in Materials Science, Polymer Science, or a comparable qualification.

  • Professional experience and knowledge in the field of biomaterials
  • Proven experience in thermal analysis and fire testing methodologies
  • Demonstrated track record of scientific communication through publications in specialist journals and presentations at international conferences
  • Experience in interdisciplinary applied research and independent project management

Additional

  • The position is a fixed-term contract for 23.5 months starting May 1, 2026. The role is based in Berlin-Steglitz and is suitable for both full-time and part-time applicants. Remuneration follows the E13 TVöD salary scale.
