(Senior) Research Software Engineer for Adaptive Laser Architecture Control | (Senior) Research Software Engineer für Adaptive Laser Architecture Control (w/m/d)
GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH
Job Summary
This role involves leading the software development for the ALADIN project at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. You will be responsible for building 'COALA', a modular software framework designed to coordinate real-time diagnostics, actuators, and feedback control for high-energy laser systems. Day-to-day, you will translate scientific workflows into technical requirements, define software architectures, and implement communication layers and service orchestration. You will also integrate these systems with established control frameworks like TANGO or EPICS and validate them on a physical testbed. This position is ideal for engineers who enjoy 'greenfield' development and want to work at the intersection of high-performance laser physics and advanced software engineering. The role offers significant design freedom, flexible working conditions with up to three days of remote work per week, and the chance to contribute to international fusion energy research in a highly stimulating scientific environment.
Required Skills
Education
Master's degree or equivalent in Physics, Computer Science, or Engineering; a PhD is welcomed but not required.
Experience
- Typically 3+ years of professional experience in scientific or technical software development
- Proven experience in designing modular, extensible software architectures and APIs
- Professional experience with modern software engineering practices including code reviews and documentation
- Experience working with distributed systems and Linux-based infrastructures
- Experience in control or feedback systems for experimental physics is highly desirable
Languages
Additional
- The position is fixed-term until May 2030. Candidates must be able to work on-site in Darmstadt with an option for up to 3 days of mobile work per week. Experience with C++ or Rust is considered a plus.
