Scientific PhD Candidate / PhD Position in Molecular Neurology (Long-Lived RNAs in Motor Neuron Disease) | Naturwissenschaftlicher Doktorand / PhD position (m/f/d) “long-lived RNAs in motor neuron disea...
Universitätsklinikum Erlangen AöR
Job Summary
This PhD position, starting in April 2026 and funded by the IZKF, focuses on investigating RNA metabolism, specifically long-lived RNAs, in motor neuron diseases (MNDs) using human brain organoid models. The core objective is to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets by understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying selective motor neuron vulnerability. Day-to-day tasks involve the culture and maintenance of patient- and control-derived iPSCs and brain organoids, phenotyping associated neural deficits, and conducting immunohistochemical and RNA imaging analyses (FISH/RNAscope, EM) on organoids and human post-mortem tissue. The ideal candidate holds a Master's degree in Molecular Medicine or Biology, possesses proficiency in English, and demonstrates high motivation, critical thinking, and a strong interest in neuroscience, stem cell biology, and neurodegeneration. This role offers a structured 3-year PhD program within a vibrant, collaborative scientific environment and state-of-the-art research facilities, with encouragement for dual affiliation with the Max Planck Graduate Program.
