Job Summary

The German Weather Service (DWD) is seeking an IT Specialist, Mathematician, or Physicist to join their Meteorological Data Management division in Offenbach. This role is crucial for operating and conceptualizing central technical data storage systems within a critical 24/7 environment. Day-to-day responsibilities include leading the design of central data storage systems based on business requirements, administering and operating high-availability database management systems (like Oracle and Postgres), and ensuring efficient data access by providing interfaces and transformation services. The ideal candidate will possess a university degree (Master's/Diploma) in a relevant field, strong programming skills (Python, C, or Java), and experience with containerized development (DevOps/GitOps with Docker/Kubernetes). This is a permanent position offering an autonomous area of responsibility and participation in improving weather forecasting.

Required Skills

Education

University Degree (Diploma/Master) in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a comparable field

Experience

  • Experience in the administration, operation, utilization, and monitoring of highly available and distributed systems and database management systems
  • Experience in handling large georeferenced data volumes
  • Experience in Service Oriented Architecture, especially REST interfaces and relevant OGC standards
  • Experience in leading projects and procurement initiatives, including in an international context
