Job Summary

This role is critical for the Adaptive Laser Architecture Development and Integration (ALADIN) project at GSI/FAIR, focusing on building the dedicated IT infrastructure for the LAOTSE laser testbed. The specialist will be responsible for the end-to-end design and implementation of a local network, including defining the network structure, IP addressing, and switch configuration, while adhering to GSI's IT guidelines. Day-to-day tasks involve installing and configuring Linux and Windows server systems, setting up server racks and cabling, integrating high-throughput GigE cameras, and establishing essential infrastructure services like time synchronization and monitoring tools. This is a unique opportunity to conceptualize and build a specialized IT environment from scratch, working at the intersection of IT operations and advanced laser research within a small, interdisciplinary, and international team, making it highly attractive for an autonomous, solution-oriented professional.

Required Skills

Education

Completed vocational training in IT (e.g., IT Specialist for System Integration, IT Systems Electronics Technician) or comparable qualification; alternatively, a relevant university degree (e.g., Bachelor of Computer Science).

Experience

  • Practical experience with small to medium-sized networks (Switches, VLANs/Subnets, Firewalls, IP planning)
  • Experience in the administration of Linux and Windows systems (Installation, configuration, user management)
  • Practical experience with server hardware, racks, and cabling in an IT or laboratory environment
  • Initial experience with network-bound devices (e.g., cameras, measurement hardware) is advantageous
