Job Summary

This is a highly attractive opportunity to establish and lead an independent Junior Research Group focused on Emerging Viruses within the framework of the Collaborative Research Center (SFB 1648) at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). The successful candidate will drive autonomous research projects aligned with the SFB's core themes: pathogenesis, target characterization, immunity, and intervention development for high-threat viral infections like Ebola, MERS, and pandemic influenza. The role requires establishing innovative methodologies and actively contributing to the SFB's Pandemic Preparedness concept. Candidates must hold a PhD or MD/PhD in a relevant life science field, demonstrate scientific excellence via a strong publication profile (as first or senior author), and meet DFG criteria for early-career researchers. This competitively funded, three-year position offers full integration into an interdisciplinary network, access to core facilities, and the potential to apply for a full Project Leader role in the subsequent funding period.

Required Skills

Education

Doctoral degree (PhD or MD/PhD) in Biology, Biochemistry, Human Biology, or a related field; OR Medical Degree (MD) with a proven Clinician-Scientist profile

Experience

  • Proven ability for independent research and project management
  • Must meet DFG criteria for early-career scientists (PhD obtained within the last 8 years, with extensions for parental leave)
