Job Summary

This is a unique opportunity for highly motivated researchers to join the Helmholtz School for Integrated Data Science in Environmental and Life Sciences (IDEAS) as a PhD candidate. The role involves conducting original, interdisciplinary research across 8 diverse projects, focusing on applying modern data science (e.g., machine learning, explainable AI, uncertainty quantification) to complex challenges in environmental and life sciences. Day-to-day tasks include deep-dive research, contributing to scientific publications, and active participation in structured IDEAS training, seminars, and cohort activities. Key requirements include a very good Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Data Science, Computer Science, Environmental Sciences), strong programming and data analysis skills, and excellent English proficiency. The position offers structured supervision, strong career development within the HIDA ecosystem, and the chance to work on high-impact topics like climate risk assessment, cancer care, and biodiversity estimation.

Required Skills

Education

Very good Master’s degree (MSc or equivalent) in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics/Statistics, Physics, Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences/Bioinformatics, Computational Social Science, or related areas

Experience

  • Professional experience working with large, complex datasets
  • Strong programming and data analysis skills
  • Ability to collaborate in diverse, interdisciplinary teams across institutions
