Job Summary
The State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe (SMNK) is seeking a motivated Trainee for a two-year, full-time position focused on Mycology (Fungus Studies) and potentially Phycology (Algae Studies) within the Botany Department. This traineeship offers a comprehensive introduction to modern scientific and museum work, qualifying the candidate for complex tasks in collection management, public relations, and exhibition conception. Day-to-day tasks include learning collection management and digitization methods, taxonomic and floristic recording of specimens, and participating in field work and public outreach, such as guiding tours and contributing to the annual fresh mushroom exhibition. The ideal candidate holds a Master's or Diploma degree in Biology with a botanical or mycological focus, possesses strong organizational and communication skills, and has experience with molecular biology or light microscopy techniques. This role is an excellent entry point into the museum sector, offering scientific development opportunities within an interdisciplinary team.
