Job Summary

This critical leadership role involves the operational and strategic management of the Environmental Protection Department at the University of Stuttgart, a major employer and research institution. The successful candidate will act as the university's certified Dangerous Goods Officer and Operational Waste Officer, overseeing four staff members and managing all aspects of dangerous goods, waste management, water protection, and immission control. Day-to-day tasks include coordinating disposal companies, managing the dangerous goods warehouse, and providing expert support to research facilities regarding hazardous waste disposal. Key qualifications include a Master's degree in Chemistry or a related field, recognized certifications as a Dangerous Goods Officer (ADR/IATA-DGR) and Operational Waste Officer (or willingness to obtain it), along with proven experience in environmental and safety management, preferably within a complex organizational setting like a university. This position offers significant scope for design and influence in developing environmental and safety standards within a leading European industrial region.

Required Skills

Education

Master's degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Environmental/Safety Engineering, Environmental/Natural Sciences, Process Engineering, Disposal/Resource Management, or comparable field; Recognized additional qualification as a Dangerous Goods Officer (ADR/IATA-DGR); Qualification as an Operational Waste Officer (or willingness to acquire it); Specialist knowledge certificate according to TRGS 520 desirable.

Experience

  • Professional experience in Dangerous Goods Management within research institutions, universities, or comparable complex organizations
  • Multi-year professional experience in environmental, disposal, or safety management, ideally in the higher education or public sector
  • Experience in leading teams and projects
  • Experience in conceptualizing and conducting training sessions
