Job Summary

This role involves leading a team of 8 professionals focused on surface water, groundwater, and general water management within the Climate and Environment Department of the City of Aachen. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting team goals, overseeing legal and technical assessments, issuing permits, and ensuring compliance with water regulations, especially in complex cases. Key responsibilities also include developing and implementing water management concepts, providing expert advice to citizens and various stakeholders, and representing the team in political committees. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to environmental protection and water resource management in a historically water-rich city, ensuring the protection of vital natural resources and human well-being.

Required Skills

Education

University degree (Dipl.-Ing. FH, Bachelor or comparable) in a relevant engineering or natural science discipline (e.g., Civil Engineering, Technical Environmental Protection, Geosciences) OR qualification for career group 2, first entry-level for environmental or civil engineering service.

Experience

  • Several years of professional experience
  • Leadership experience in public administration (desirable)

  • Class B driving license required. Willingness to acquire comprehensive knowledge of environmental law, especially water law, and administrative/regulatory law if not already possessed. Willingness to participate in on-call duty for the Lower Environmental Protection Authority (oil and chemical alarms).
