Job Summary

This is a unique part-time (65%), fixed-term PhD position starting in March 2026 at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, focusing on the fascinating origin of eusociality in socially variable halictid bees. The successful candidate will conduct a research project to obtain a doctoral degree, investigating how changes in gene regulatory mechanisms drive social evolution. Day-to-day tasks involve planning and executing extensive fieldwork in Germany and the Czech Republic, performing cutting-edge molecular genetic analyses using high-throughput sequencing techniques (RNA-Seq, ATAC-Seq, Cut&Tag, Enzyme-Methyl-seq), and applying corresponding bioinformatics procedures. The role requires a completed Master's degree in Biology or a related field, solid molecular biology knowledge, and experience working with various bee species (wild bees, bumblebees, and honey bees) both in the lab and in the field.
