Job Summary
This role is a unique opportunity for a Technical Assistant to contribute to scientific research on invertebrate biodiversity, specifically within the Malacology section of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research in Görlitz. The successful candidate will be responsible for the technical maintenance of the invertebrate collection, primarily mollusks, involving tasks such as inventory, labeling, organization of dry and liquid specimens, and coordinating international loans. Day-to-day duties also include managing the collection database, preparing data for online publication, general organizational tasks, and essential fieldwork, including mollusk collection and soil sampling. A key responsibility involves laboratory work, such as sample processing, dissection, killing, and preservation of mollusks, tissue sampling, and caring for lab animals (snails). This position requires a background as a Technical Assistant for natural history museums or a comparable qualification, strong interest in invertebrate biology, and proficiency with optical systems like stereomicroscopes. It is a part-time (50%), initially fixed-term (2 years) position with the option for permanent employment, offering flexible hours and a collaborative research environment.
Required Skills
Education
Completed training as a Technical Assistant for natural history museums and research institutions, as a Biological Laboratory Technician, or a comparable qualification
Experience
- Professional experience in laboratory work
- Safe and independent handling of optical systems, especially camera and stereomicroscope
- Ability and willingness to perform field and outdoor work
- Initial experience with database systems (for implementation)
- Experience with non-marine mollusk identification or other invertebrate groups (Desirable)
- Experience with database and collection management systems (Desirable)
