Job Summary

The State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe (SMNK) is seeking a dedicated Botanical Preparator to join its Botany Department, which manages a vast collection of over 600,000 specimens, some dating back over 300 years. This full-time, permanent role involves crucial collection management tasks, focusing on the systematization, preparation, digitization, and long-term preservation of specimens including seed plants, ferns, fungi, mosses, lichens, and algae. Day-to-day responsibilities include integrated pest management, organizing and sorting specimens, digital data capture, labeling, and synonym verification. The ideal candidate will have professional training as a Technical Assistant for natural history museums or comparable preparation experience, strong practical skills in various preparation techniques, and proficiency with PC applications (MS Office). Knowledge of collection databases like Diversity Workbench is a plus. Required Skills

Education

Training as a Technical Assistant for natural history museums and research institutes, professional preparator, or comparable qualification.

Experience

  • Practical experience in the preparation of collection material (seed plants, ferns, fungi, mosses, lichens, and algae)
  • Professional experience in museological collection and research work (demonstrated interest)
