Job Summary

The TUD Dresden University of Technology is seeking a Research Associate/PhD Student to join the 'E-Sailors' Doctoral Network, focusing on Electric solar wind Sail (E-sail) technology development. The core responsibility of this role, dubbed 'E-Sailor 3,' is to explore and analyze future solar-wind propulsion concepts beyond the classical E-sail, such as the Dipole Drive or solar-wind ion focusing thrusters. Day-to-day tasks involve conducting thorough literature reviews, developing advanced mathematical and numerical models, and potentially building and testing sub-scale prototypes to validate the models. The ideal candidate will possess core scientific skills in space technology design, be capable of innovative and independent research, and be committed to publishing and presenting findings. This position offers specialized training in scientific skills, transferable competencies (Open Science, networking), and business/entrepreneurship skills, ensuring the successful candidate contributes to the EU's leadership in deep space exploration.

Required Skills

Education

Doctoral Candidate (PhD) level qualification required. Specific degree area in Mechanical Science and Engineering or related field (implied by faculty/institute).

Experience

  • Experience in developing new concepts or improving existing methodologies
  • Experience in adapting, developing, and learning new tools, software, and methodologies independently
  • Experience in designing experiments for demonstrating space technologies and developing space missions (implied by training objectives)

  • Position is limited to 36 months. Must comply with MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE grant agreement regulations. Requires a 2-month secondment at FMI in Finland.
