Job Summary

This position offers a unique opportunity to join the 'Sustainable Metallurgy' working group at Saarland University, focusing on the critical CircularSaar project which supports regional industries in transitioning to a sustainable circular economy. The Research Associate will conduct systematic investigations into the influence of trace elements that accumulate during the recycling of steel scrap, analyzing their impact on the manufacturing process and final product properties. Key responsibilities include microstructural and mechanical characterization, operating specialized furnace setups, and close cooperation with major industrial partners like Dillinger Hütte and Saarstahl. The role requires a strong background in Materials Science or Engineering, experience with advanced characterization tools (e.g., REM, STEM), and excellent communication skills for scientific publication and industrial collaboration. This is a crucial role supporting sustainable transformation in energy- and material-intensive industries.

Required Skills

Education

Completed scientific university degree (Master's equivalent) in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a comparable field, or a PhD in a related field.

Experience

  • Experience in metallographic preparation and interpretation of metal structures
  • Experience in mechanical testing
  • Experience in structural characterization using advanced techniques (e.g., REM, STEM)
  • Experience in the use of large-scale research equipment
  • Experience in the supervision and maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Publication experience in peer-reviewed journals
  • Teaching experience in Materials Science or Engineering (desirable)
