Job Summary

This position is a part-time (50%, 19.35 hours/week) Research Associate role aimed at achieving a doctoral degree within the Institute for Physical Chemistry at Kiel University, starting January 15, 2026. The successful candidate will drive the project 'Structure and Reactivity of Catalytic Surfaces in the Pressure Gap,' focusing on developing a deeper understanding of reaction mechanisms of small molecules at interfaces, crucial for industrial catalysis and atmospheric chemistry. The role involves utilizing the cutting-edge Near-Ambient Pressure Velocity Map Imaging (NAP-VMI) technique, combining molecular beams, laser spectroscopy, and ion imaging to study surface reaction kinetics under elevated pressure. Daily tasks include experimental planning, execution, data analysis, preparing results for publication, and potential participation in experiments at synchrotron light sources (e.g., MAX-IV or BESSY). This interdisciplinary project requires a Master's degree in Physical Chemistry or a related field, strong language skills in German and English (B2 minimum), and an interest in learning Python programming.
