Job Summary

The Cluster of Excellence ROOTS at Kiel University is seeking a Scientific Director for its Archaeobotanical Laboratories. This crucial, permanent, full-time role involves leading and coordinating the archaeobotanical labs within ROOTS and the upcoming ARCWorlds research building, including the supervision of the associated Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with EDX. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, organizing, and executing diverse archaeo- and palaeobotanical investigations, ensuring scientific analysis, evaluation, and presentation of findings. Key qualifications include an advanced university degree in Archaeobotany/Palaeoecology (or equivalent), extensive knowledge of various archaeo- and palaeobotanical proxies (macro-remains, wood, charcoal, pollen), and intensive experience with microscopy techniques (light, incident light, and SEM). The role also requires experience in knowledge transfer to the public and engagement in interdisciplinary research projects.

Experience

  • Experience with archaeo- and palaeobotanical field research
  • Experience with experimental archaeobotany and conducting cultivation experiments
  • Intensive experience with microscopy (SEM, incident light, transmitted light) including user instruction
  • Experience with knowledge transfer from archaeobotany/botany to schools, museums, etc.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research in collaborative projects
