Job Summary

This role involves leading, expanding, and coordinating the existing Dendroarchaeology Laboratory within the ROOTS Cluster of Excellence at Kiel University. The Scientific Lead will focus research on settlement archaeology, reconstructing settlement patterns, landscape use, forest management, and paleo-climate reconstruction of past societies. Key responsibilities include developing the dendrochronological dating capabilities and stable isotope measurements (in collaboration with the Leibniz Laboratory), and initiating internally and externally funded research projects. The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Pre- and Early History or a related field, possess a strong research record, and have multi-year professional experience in Dendroarchaeology, Dendroecology/Dendroclimatology, and Anthracology. Integration into the ROOTS research agenda and the Settlement Archaeology and Archaeoclimatology working group within ARCWorlds is expected, offering opportunities for collaborative research with doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. This is a full-time, fixed-term position until December 31, 2030.
