Job Summary
This role involves essential engineering work within Dortmund's municipal drainage department, focusing specifically on the investigation and management of private property connection lines. Day-to-day tasks include classifying potential damages found in inspection videos using standardized reference catalogs and applying professional expertise to assess the condition of wastewater systems. A significant component of the job is direct engagement with property owners, providing on-site consultation regarding damage remediation, backflow protection, and rainwater management, requiring strong communicative and empathetic skills. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute pioneering work to the ongoing development and organization of the city's long-term property connection line investigation program. The ideal candidate holds a degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering with a focus on Urban Water Management, possesses good water management knowledge, and is proficient in German (C1 level) for effective public communication.
Required Skills
Education
Completed degree in Civil Engineering (specialization: Urban Water Management), Environmental Engineering, or comparable studies (e.g., Supply and Disposal Technology, Water Sciences, Sustainable Development); or status as a Civil Service official (Technical Service, Career Group 2, 1st Entry Level)
Experience
- Professional experience in Civil/Environmental Engineering or related fields
- Long-term professional experience as a Sewer Master or Technician in sewer rehabilitation and private wastewater damage classification (alternative qualification path)
- Experience in damage assessment and classification of private wastewater facilities (knowledge can be supplemented by training)

- Part-time employment (19.5 hours per week); Strong empathy and active listening skills required for property owner consultation; Willingness to participate in relevant training (e.g., Sewer Rehabilitation Consultant); Must be able to travel locally for on-site consulting and information events.
