Job Summary

This position is for a highly motivated PhD student focusing on neurobiology and cell biology within the Institute of Clinical Neurobiology at Würzburg University Hospital. The core project involves designing and developing therapeutic strategies for motoneuron disorders, specifically Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress type 1 (SMARD1). Day-to-day tasks include identifying and characterizing cellular target molecules using advanced molecular biology and cell culture techniques, such as iPSCs from SMARD1 patients and primary motoneurons from mouse models. You will conduct detailed analysis of the IGHMBP2 helicase and investigate defective microcircuits using motor function studies, histological analysis, and confocal microscopy. The ideal candidate possesses basic knowledge in neurobiology and strong technical skills in molecular biology, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to DFG-funded research in a modern, well-equipped facility with extensive national and international collaborations.
