Job Summary

The Head of the Sustainability Office will lead a newly established unit within the renowned Max Planck Society, driving the organization's ambitious climate and sustainability goals outlined in its Climate Action Plan. Day-to-day responsibilities include overseeing fundamental tasks related to energy policy, energy management, and climate neutrality, specifically ensuring compliance with the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) and monitoring mandated energy savings. The role involves developing energy consumption tracking across the organization, coordinating external consultants for renewable energy procurement (especially green power), and managing international research policy analysis related to climate change (e.g., supporting IPCC/COP representation). Candidates must possess a scientific university degree, potentially a PhD, coupled with profound knowledge and leadership experience in climate policy, energy economics, and energy management. This position requires strong organizational skills, stress resilience, and very good English proficiency, offering a unique opportunity to shape the sustainability strategy of a leading global research institution.

Education

Successful scientific university degree (Master's or equivalent), Doctorate (PhD) potentially advantageous

Experience

  • Proven profound knowledge and experience in climate and energy policy
  • Experience in relevant legislation concerning climate protection and energy efficiency
  • Experience in energy management and energy economics
  • Experience leading and managing a highly motivated and qualified team (initially 4 central staff, up to 5 decentralized energy managers)
