Job Summary

This role involves the development, implementation, and maintenance of IT systems and procedures, primarily focusing on database structures and metadata management for meteorological and climatological data acquisition at the German Weather Service (DWD). The specialist will ensure the operational readiness of technical-meteorological IT systems, implement specialized testing procedures, and support the creation of service specifications for external contractors. A key responsibility is acting as the international contact person for metadata within the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), actively steering international development in this area. The ideal candidate holds a degree in Computer Science, Geosciences, Physics, or Meteorology (FH/Bachelor level) and possesses strong proficiency in both German (C1) and English (B2). This is an opportunity to contribute to the quality improvement of critical national weather products through advanced data processing and international collaboration.

Required Skills

Education

University of Applied Sciences Diploma (FH) or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Geosciences, Physics, or Meteorology, or equivalent qualification/civil service examination for the higher technical or scientific service.

Experience

  • Professional experience in using relational databases (Desirable)
  • Professional experience with binary data formats (e.g., BUFR, GRIB) for meteorological data (Desirable)
  • Professional experience in programming and scripting languages (e.g., Shell, SQL/PLSQL) (Desirable)
  • Professional experience collaborating with external contractors (Desirable)
