PhD Researcher in Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) Z-Pin Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites | PhD position: Shape memory alloy (SMA) Z-pin fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites
Empa
Job Summary
The successful candidate will undertake a challenging four-year, fully funded PhD project at Empa in collaboration with ETH Zurich, focusing on advanced structural materials. This research, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), aims to fundamentally understand and quantitatively assess the efficiency of using prestressed Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) Z-pins for interlaminar reinforcement in laminated Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs). Day-to-day tasks involve the design and manufacturing of SMA Z-pinned FRPs, conducting mechanical characterization and fracture experiments, alongside advanced micromechanical and progressive damage modeling. This opportunity offers access to state-of-the-art experimental and computational infrastructure within a dynamic, internationally oriented research environment, culminating in a PhD thesis at ETH Zurich. Candidates must hold a Master's degree in engineering, possess a solid background in mechanics of materials and FEA, and be fluent in English.
