Job Summary

The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) is seeking a Research Associate to join their team in Hannover, focusing on scientific work within the BMFTR-funded "ReTail" project. This role involves extracting metals and elements from tailings of former ore processing at Rammelsberg, Goslar, Harz, with the goal of developing a suitable pilot-scale processing method. Day-to-day tasks include planning, conducting, and scientifically evaluating laboratory experiments for bioleaching in 2L and 20L bioreactors. The successful candidate will optimize metal extraction from tailings fractions, focusing on lead extraction using organic acid-producing heterotrophic bacteria and fungi, and cobalt extraction with acidophilic autotrophic bacteria. This position offers an opportunity for scientific qualification, including presenting results at seminars and conferences, and publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals.

Required Skills

Education

University degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Hydrometallurgy, Bioprocess Engineering, Chemistry, or a comparable field.

Experience

  • Practical experience in independent laboratory work, preferably in (bio)hydrometallurgy and/or microbiology
  • Experience in cultivating bacteria
  • Experience in processing techniques
  • Experience in (bio)hydrometallurgy
  • Experience in publishing in peer-reviewed journals (desirable)
  • Professional experience at a federal authority or departmental research institution (desirable)
