Job Summary

This IT Engineer position at the Centre for Organismal Studies (COS) Heidelberg focuses on the operation and comprehensive management of research data. The role involves implementing robust data backup and storage concepts, managing and migrating large datasets, and overseeing metadata management and archiving. Beyond data, the engineer will be responsible for planning, operating, and documenting complex IT projects related to infrastructure, servers, and data centers. Key tasks include user and rights management, network configuration, client management across Windows, Mac, and Linux, and supporting virtual infrastructures. Required Skills

Education

Master's degree or University Diploma in Computer Science, Data Science, Bioinformatics, a related field, or Natural Sciences

Experience

  • At least 3 years of professional experience in planning, implementing, and optimizing complex IT infrastructures
  • Sound network knowledge (security, VLAN, routing, switching, firewall)
  • Very good knowledge of Linux
  • Good knowledge of Windows PC, Windows Server, and macOS
  • Knowledge of virtual infrastructures and container solutions (VMware, Docker)
  • Knowledge of automated tools for installation, configuration, and administration of heterogeneous computer environments
  • Sound knowledge in web services and server administration
  • Knowledge of designing and managing large storage systems
  • Experience with project and network documentation
  • Experience with incident and problem management
