Job Summary
The Junior Data Scientist will join the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) in Bern, working 60-80%, with flexible home office options. This role is pivotal in advancing the organization's digital transformation by applying Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to critical areas like risk analysis and operational processes. Day-to-day tasks include developing and operationalizing ML models, creating ML prototypes as web applications in collaboration with Data Engineers, and conducting complex ad-hoc analyses and visualizations. You will also support specialist users in defining requirements and improving data quality. This position offers a unique chance to work at the intersection of public security and cutting-edge software development, contributing directly to the safety and digital efficiency of Switzerland. Candidates must hold a university degree in a quantitative field and possess foundational knowledge of ML frameworks and Python development.
Required Skills
Education
University degree in Natural Sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a comparable field of study
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of professional experience in Machine Learning OR high-quality private/academic projects in the field
- Experience in developing ML prototypes in the form of web applications
- Experience in complex ad-hoc analysis, reports, and visualizations
Languages

- Work location is Bern, Switzerland, with home office flexibility. The workload is 60-80%. Active knowledge of a second official language (besides the primary working language) is beneficial.
