Job Summary

Join a leading applied research organization as a Sustainability Engineer focusing on AI and Systems Engineering. In this role, you will drive innovation by working on research and industrial projects throughout the entire product lifecycle. Your day-to-day will involve identifying sustainability potentials, designing methodologies, and implementing technical solutions, particularly for Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), Product Carbon Footprints (PCF), and Digital Product Passports (DPP), leveraging AI for analysis and automation. You will integrate sustainability assessments and AI features into existing engineering toolchains and data flows, evaluating their impact on transparency and decision-making. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, industry partners, and public clients is key, as is presenting findings and publishing results. The ideal candidate possesses a strong technical or business degree, experience in LCA/PCF/DPP, and ideally AI/ML knowledge, coupled with a good understanding of product lifecycle processes like Systems Engineering or MBSE. Excellent communication skills in German and English are essential.

Required Skills

Education

University degree (above average) in a technical or business field such as Computer Science, Business Informatics, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Business Administration.

Experience

  • Experience or profound methodological and tool knowledge in Life Cycle Assessment, Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), or Digital Product Passport (DPP).
  • Ideally complemented by knowledge in AI/ML for analysis and automation.
  • Good know-how along the product lifecycle, e.g., in Systems Engineering, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), product development, or related approaches.
  • Ability to quickly familiarize with new application domains and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience in analyzing complex contexts and translating them into actionable, data-based concepts.
  • Experience in presenting technical content convincingly to clients, project partners, and academic audiences.
