Job Summary

The Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB) is seeking a Semantic Modeller / Knowledge Engineer to join their Centre for Biodiversity Knowledge Science in Hamburg. In this role, you will lead the formal semantic modelling of content for the LIB Open Knowledge Space, designing and maintaining ontologies, graph schemata, and SHACL shapes. You will work within the BFO/OBO ecosystem to ensure biodiversity data is represented in a precise, interoperable, and reusable manner, adhering to FAIR and CLEAR principles. This position is ideal for a professional passionate about digital innovation in biodiversity research, offering the chance to work in a globally connected research environment. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, implement ontology-centric workflows, and contribute to open-source code bases. The role provides a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between scientific collections, research, and society, with the potential for a permanent contract following an initial two-year term.

Required Skills

Education

Master’s degree or equivalent in computer science, data science, bioinformatics, or a related field; PhD is considered a desirable qualification.

Experience

  • Professional experience in formal semantic modelling and ontology engineering.
  • Experience in the development of ontologies and graph schemata using industry-standard tools.
  • Experience in research infrastructures or data-intensive scientific projects.
  • Experience in persistent-identifier schemes and provenance modelling.
