Job Summary

This PhD position offers the unique opportunity to conduct research on Large Industry Models (LIMs) within the BMW Group. You will focus on training reasoning models using BMW-specific data to optimize industrial processes, particularly in quality and problem management. Your day-to-day work will involve developing methods for data curation, implementing training strategies like SFT, LoRA, and RLHF, and building prototypes for semantic retrieval and agentic loops. You will also be responsible for creating a benchmark to evaluate model quality and auditability. This role is highly collaborative, requiring close interaction with MLOps engineers, corporate quality teams, and academic partners. The position is ideal for a candidate passionate about advancing AI in an industrial context, offering a 36-month duration, professional mentoring, and the chance to pilot solutions directly in BMW manufacturing plants.

Required Skills

Education

Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.

Experience

  • Professional experience in Machine Learning, Large Language Models, and algorithm development
  • Initial practical experience in Natural Language Processing, reasoning models, Chain-of-Thought, or multimodal modeling
  • Experience with software development and ML frameworks, specifically Python and PyTorch
  • Exposure to high-performance or cloud computing environments
