Job Summary

The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) is seeking a dedicated Radiocarbon Analysis Engineer to support its world-class 14C laboratory in Jena. In this role, you will be responsible for the routine operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of a Micadas accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) system. Your daily activities will involve data analysis, repairing complex automated measuring equipment, and maintaining vacuum lines used for sample combustion and CO2 purification. Beyond maintenance, you will drive technical innovation by developing new sample preparation systems and collaborating on quality assurance processes within an international team. This position is ideal for a hands-on professional with a background in engineering or physics who enjoys precision mechanical work and laboratory automation. The role offers an initial two-year contract with the strong prospect of permanent employment, providing a stable career path within a renowned research institution located in the vibrant, high-tech hub of Jena.

Required Skills

Education

University degree in Engineering or a Master's degree in Physics or a natural science subject with a significant laboratory component.

Experience

  • Professional experience in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of complex automated measurement systems
  • Proven expertise in precision mechanical work related to laboratory equipment repair
  • Experience with laboratory automation software such as LabVIEW or similar tools
  • Experience with vacuum systems, automated combustion systems, or stable isotope measurements is highly desirable
  • Professional experience working within a scientific or laboratory environment
