Job Summary

The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart (SMNS) is seeking a Curator and Scientist in Ichthyology to manage and expand its world-class fish collection, which includes approximately 200,000 specimens. In this role, you will lead an outstanding research program focused on fish systematics, taxonomy, and evolution while securing competitive third-party funding. Day-to-day responsibilities involve curating the collection according to international standards, conducting hypothesis-driven research using genomics or morphology, and publishing findings in high-impact journals. You will also play a key role in public outreach and the scientific design of museum exhibitions. This position is unique for its integration of high-level research with a massive historical collection, supported by state-of-the-art molecular and imaging laboratories. It offers a collaborative environment with strong links to the University of Hohenheim and provides a permanent contract with flexible working conditions.

Required Skills

Education

PhD in Biology or a closely related field.

Experience

  • Professional experience in the scientific curation of fish collections
  • Proven track record of high-impact scientific publications in international journals
  • Demonstrated success in securing competitive third-party research funding
  • Experience in international scientific collaborations
  • Experience in science communication and public outreach
  • Experience in university-level teaching and student supervision is preferred
