Postdoctoral Researcher in Rotating Convection and 2D Turbulence | Postdoctoral Position (m/f/d) in rotating convection and 2D turbulence
MPI f. Sonnensystemforschung
Job Summary
This postdoctoral role at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research involves investigating the fundamental dynamics of rotating flows and turbulent transport. As a researcher, you will utilize theoretical, numerical, and data-driven approaches to study large-scale coherent structures and their relevance to planetary flows, such as Earth's dynamo and the interiors of Jupiter and Saturn. You will be responsible for developing reduced models and scaling relations while comparing numerical simulations with observational data. The position is ideal for candidates with a strong background in fluid dynamics or astrophysics who are comfortable with high-performance computing. This role offers a unique opportunity to work in a world-leading research environment with access to state-of-the-art supercomputers, flexible working hours, and a comprehensive benefits package under the TVöD-Bund public service framework.
Required Skills
Education
PhD in fluid dynamics, physics, applied mathematics, geophysics, astrophysics, or a related field.
Experience
- Professional experience in turbulence, rotating flows, convection, or dynamo-related problems
- Experience with numerical methods and scientific programming
- Experience with high-performance computing (desirable)
- Experience in developing reduced models and scaling relations for turbulent transport
Languages
Additional
- The position is a fixed-term contract starting June 1, 2026, or later. Applications must include a cover letter, CV, publication list, and a 2-page research statement. Location: Göttingen, Germany.
