Job Summary

This role is based at the Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) in cooperation with Nutrition & Food GmbH in Lüchow. As a Technical Research Assistant, you will be central to the 'IQ-Wels-MV' research project, focusing on the sustainable breeding and production of African catfish within a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS). Your daily responsibilities include managing fish reproduction, monitoring animal health and welfare, and overseeing the technical operations of the RAS facility. You will perform large-scale manual phenotyping across various fish families and age groups to support breeding value estimations. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a high-output production environment (400-600 tons per year) while contributing to innovative genetic research. It is particularly attractive for professionals seeking a long-term perspective, as there is a clear intention to transition the role into a permanent position with the industrial partner after the project ends in 2028.

Required Skills

Education

Bachelor's degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries Management, or applied Chemical/Biological Sciences; OR a technical qualification as a Biological Laboratory Assistant or Fish Farmer with several years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • Professional experience in aquaculture or fish production
  • Practical experience in fish propagation and rearing
  • Experience in manual phenotyping and size selection of large fish populations
  • Experience working with technical aquaculture equipment and RAS protocols
  • Experience in biological sampling and protocol adherence

Additional

  • Valid Class B driver's license is desirable. The role is based at the partner facility in Lüchow, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Willingness to perform physical labor (harvesting, sorting) is required. Fixed-term contract until August 31, 2028.
