Job Summary

This role is based at the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Virology and Hygiene at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). As a key member of the cellular microbiology research group, you will investigate the interaction between bacteria (Yersinia) and host cells such as macrophages. Your day-to-day responsibilities include planning and executing complex experiments involving molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and microscopy. You will handle DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, protein purification via FPLC, and advanced fluorescence imaging. Beyond technical execution, you will manage laboratory organization, participate in international meetings, and contribute to scientific publications and reports. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at a leading European university hospital within a highly collaborative and international research environment. The role is initially fixed-term for three years with a planned extension, providing a stable yet dynamic setting for professionals passionate about experimental basic research and laboratory diagnostics.

Required Skills

Education

Completed vocational training as a Biological, Chemical, Veterinary, or Medical Laboratory Assistant (BTA/CTA/VMTA/MTLA/MTL/MTV) or Laboratory Technician. Alternatively, a university degree (Bachelor's or Master's) in Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Life Science, or Molecular Biology.

Experience

  • Professional experience in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, microscopy, or bacterial genetics (demonstrable experience in at least two of these areas required)
  • Experience with aseptic techniques and laboratory safety protocols
  • Experience in laboratory organization and documentation using ELN/SOPs
  • 2 years of active professional experience in a laboratory setting required for specific salary grading (EG 9b) if holding a university degree
