Job Summary
As a key executive for the Association of German Cities (Deutscher Städtetag), you will represent the interests of German municipalities at the federal, state, and EU levels. Your day-to-day role involves shaping policies related to the heat transition, renewable energy expansion, and climate neutrality, while also overseeing fire protection and disaster management portfolios. You will lead a distributed team of nine employees across Cologne and Berlin, acting as a strategic liaison between city governments and legislative bodies. This position is unique as it offers a high-level political mandate with an initial eight-year term and the potential to serve as Deputy Executive Director. It is an ideal role for a senior leader passionate about municipal self-governance and sustainable urban development who thrives in high-stakes networking and legislative environments. The role provides a prestigious platform to influence national energy and environmental policy from a local perspective.
Required Skills
Education
Completed university degree in a relevant field such as Administrative Science, Economics, Political Science, or Law (Second State Examination).
Experience
- At least 5 years of leadership experience in a professional environment
- Several years of professional experience in a high-level responsible role relevant to municipal or public affairs
- Extensive experience with legislative procedures and political decision-making processes
- Proven track record in networking and managing relationships with political decision-makers
- Experience in balancing diverse interests and moderating complex stakeholder groups

- Willingness to travel frequently is required. The role involves a formal election process by the Main Committee. Position is based in either Cologne or Berlin. Must be eligible for appointment under federal civil service principles (Besoldungsgruppe B 5).
