Job Summary
This two-year preparatory service (Referendariat) within the North Rhine-Westphalia environmental administration prepares candidates for high-level civil service careers. Starting in October 2026, trainees will rotate through district governments in Arnsberg, Detmold, Düsseldorf, or Cologne, engaging in the practical application of environmental law and engineering. Day-to-day responsibilities involve managing technical environmental protection tasks, including waste management, water supply, and emission control. The program culminates in the Second State Examination, qualifying participants as 'Environmental Assessors.' Required Skills
Education
Master’s degree or Diploma from a university or accredited technical college in Civil Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Energy Technology, Hydrology, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Environmental Engineering, or Process Engineering.
Experience
- Professional experience or internships in waste treatment, water supply, or emission control is advantageous
- Alternatively, at least 3 years of professional experience in genetic engineering or microbiology
- Demonstrated capacity for initiative and negotiation in professional settings
- Experience in technical-scientific project work through academic focus

- Must be eligible for appointment as a civil servant in Germany (Beamtenverhältnis auf Widerruf). Foreign degrees must be officially recognized and submitted with German translations. Applicants must participate in a multi-stage assessment center selection process.
