This is a prestigious two-year preparatory service (Referendariat) for the higher technical administrative service within the environmental administration of North Rhine-Westphalia. Starting October 1, 2026, successful candidates will undergo practical training at district governments in Arnsberg, Detmold, Düsseldorf, or Cologne. The role involves applying scientific and engineering expertise to public environmental protection tasks, including waste management, water supply, and emission control. Trainees are appointed as temporary civil servants and prepare for the Second State Examination to become 'Environmental Assessors.' This position is unique as it offers a structured path into a permanent lifelong career as a civil servant (A 13 salary grade) upon successful completion. Required Skills

Education

Master's degree or Diploma from a university or accredited university of applied sciences in Civil Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Energy Technology, Hydrology, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Environmental Engineering, or Process Engineering.

Experience

  • Professional experience or internships in waste treatment, wastewater management, or emission control is advantageous
  • Alternatively, at least three years of professional experience in genetic engineering or microbiology
  • Proven ability in teamwork, organization, and conflict resolution
  • Experience in negotiation and independent project initiative
