Job Summary

As a Forensic Science Technician at the Essen Police Headquarters, you will play a critical role in criminal investigations by independently conducting crime scene and laboratory examinations. Your day-to-day responsibilities include securing DNA, fiber, and biological traces, as well as analyzing shoe and tire impressions. You will handle specialized tasks involving firearms, gunshot residue, and the identification of narcotics using Raman spectroscopy and NIR scanners. A significant portion of the role involves drafting expert reports and forensic documentation to support criminal cases, including high-priority investigations like homicide commissions. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of science and law enforcement within the North Rhine-Westphalia Police. Required Skills

Education

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Biology; OR vocational training as a Chemical-Technical Assistant (CTA), Biological-Technical Assistant (BTA), or Physical-Technical Assistant (PTA); OR qualification as a Chemistry Laboratory Technician.

Experience

  • Professional experience in chemical or biological laboratory environments
  • Experience in crime scene investigation and trace preservation
  • At least 3 years of professional experience required if applying with a Chemistry Laboratory Technician qualification
  • Experience in drafting technical reports or forensic expert opinions
  • Experience in handling hazardous substances or narcotics analysis is beneficial

Additional

  • Valid Class B driver's license required. Must be willing to participate in on-call shifts (Rufbereitschaft) and support special organizational units (BAO) for major crimes. Physical and psychological resilience for crime scene work is mandatory.
