Job Summary

As a Physicist within the Sample Environment service team at the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science, you will play a critical role in supporting international researchers at the Heinz Meier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ). Your day-to-day responsibilities involve managing a diverse fleet of high-performance equipment, including cryostats, cryomagnets, and dilution inserts, ensuring samples are maintained under precise conditions such as magnetic fields and extreme temperatures (mK to K). You will be responsible for the provision, maintenance, repair, and modernization of these systems, often collaborating with engineering and software departments for custom developments. This role is ideal for a hands-on professional who enjoys technical problem-solving in a laboratory setting while contributing to cutting-edge research in physics, chemistry, and material sciences. The position offers a unique opportunity to work at one of Europe's largest research centers, combining high-level scientific theory with practical mechanical work in an international environment.

Required Skills

Education

Master's degree or Diploma in Physics or a comparable field; a PhD is preferred.

Experience

  • Professional experience in the handling, maintenance, and repair of dry and wet cryostats and mK-inserts
  • Experience in the independent setup of experiments and measuring instruments
  • Practical experience with high vacuum systems, including flange systems, pumps, and leak detection
  • Proven experience in hands-on technical work including mechanical assembly and soldering
  • Experience working within a scientific service or laboratory environment
